A simple change can make a big difference in a quilt. Color choice can influence a quilt big time too; it is one aspect of design that makes the quilting possibilities endless. Fabric is fun; fabric is the paint to our canvas. When I see a quilt I like it usually because of the color palate - not the pattern. I am drawn to the white background and the simple geometric quilts as of late.
But sometimes it is the pattern that grabs me, and that's what grabbed me about my latest finish, the Sexy Hexy Red. Amy Butler hooked me with the Sexy Hexy Love pattern made with her fabric line Love. The bold, and big hexagons were great -- the fabric I wasn't in love with. So I do what I do best and -- made do with what I have. And in this case it made all the difference in the quilt.
To make the quilt like I did use the following cut templates and fabric choices and you'll have a hexagon flower quilt in no time. But first download the Amy Butler Pattern from the link above and in the section labeled Cut Out the Fabric Pieces use this list instead:
Hexagon A:
Red Fabric: 6
White Fabric: 1
Hexagon B:
White Fabric: 4 (no red fabric)
Band C:
Red Fabric: 18
White Fabric: 36
Band D:
Red Fabric: 36
White Fabric: 18
Side Band F:
White Fabric: 12 (no red fabric)
Triangle E:
Red Fabric: 6 (no white fabric)
Easy right?! Follow all the other directions just as you normally would. There are so many possibilities here with color choice, not just red and white - all though they do look smashing together, but how about red and aqua or white outside bands and yellow hexagons -- or rainbows! Really the color choices here are endless....and that's the part about color and quilts that I love.
Cheers!
Kelly
