Friday Photo Inspiration: What's on my Mind

1. IMGP3993, 2. summer vegetables, 3. warmcool-detail, 4. again with the kitty and the sewing machine(s), 5. Pinwheel Blocks, 6. Strips for a Warm Cool Quilt

This week Hubby was out of town for work, and you'd think that would mean 5 straight days of sewing. And you'd be right, expect for the fact that Astrid, my wonderful sewing machine, is out of commission. Big Time. I've only had her 6 short months, but in that time I've made so many memories! I wish it wasn't so, but it looks like I'm in the market for a brand spanking new sewing machine. I just might be getting one that free motion quilts, for reals.
I'm thinking of that, and I'm thinking of how to go about selling my wares. Living in Portland there is such a huge market for handmade goods that I know I will have better luck through small retails stores and street fairs. The internet is such a big place, and etsy is such a big place I need to try the home front and see where it takes me. I'm still developing my brand and product lines but I am very happy with where I am headed.
The summer garden is in swing, cucumbers, beans, tomatoes the size of baseballs. It's a good summer for veggies here and I can't wait to can tomatoes for winter pasta.
I'd love to sew my warm/cool quilt and I'm designing a pinwheel quilt, but these will come later....the baby isn't due till 2012.
Have a lovely weekend, the last few before fall......
Best,
Kelly

You're very fortunate to live in such a supportive area. Handmade goods aren't valued here very much unless you happen to get another crafter wanting something. Selling quilts here is impossible. People want you to sell them for less than it cost to make them! Ugh!
I am intrigued to see what sewing machine you decide on...I need one with more throat space but they're not cheap, are they!

I totally agree with the SewHappyGeek!!You're so fortunate:) I know that it'll be impossilbe to sell my handmade goods here in Greece, due to the major economical crisis, going on these days!! As for etsy, I agree that it's a huge place. Just opened though my little shop, with only one item to sell...hehee...but hopefully I'm gonna fill it up!!

That's so nice to be able to grow your own veggies.. I wish we could do it too,in our balcony!!
xoxo
Have a lovely weekend:)

Hi Kelly! I agree the comments before mine about difficulties selling crafts. Here it's not possible ecxept to some friends. Internet is a huge place but there is space for all of us! Good luck with your machine - I would need desperately a new one!
Have a lovely day!

Thanks so much ladies for your encouragement, we need more of this craft selling community chit-chat, don't you think!

Teje [you're still a no comment blogger, so here is your reply:)]- Yes, it can be difficult selling what you've made.... because you are selling a part of yourself and to 'put that out there' is hard for me! But if I want to be successful and make some money I've got to get confidence and go out there and do it! Esty is a great place to start and I'm glad I'm there, it's just not fast enough for me!
Have a wonderful weekend in your Greek Paradise ;)

Love all your pictures, especially the pinwheels. And good luck selling your quilts. I just started a website to sell baby quilts, and so far the only sale has been to one of my friends. I am hoping that I can get it going by selling premade quilts, and at some point being able to sell my own quilts, but that may take awhile. Who knew it took so much work to set up a website?

Hi Beth, Thanks for stopping by and commenting! You are so right, it takes so much work to get a site going, and build up the inventory and all of that...but being a SAHM for the next few years, I've got some time ;) Good luck with your shop, success just takes time, hard work and a little bit of luck! Best!
